Blog #1 Death of the Knights Templar
When I attended graduate school, History books claimed the Pope dissolved the Order of the Knights Templar in 1312. But that wasn't the end of the story. Read on.
It isn't well known, but the Templars warred against the Muslims in locations outside the Holy land, including Spain and Portugal. A struggle Christians referred to as the Reconquista.
Portugal was the first to evict the Muslims in 1272 thanks in large part to the superb military skills of the Knights Templar. But the Order’s accomplishment was forgotten 40 years later, when the Pope bowed to the King of France and abolished it
The king was so greedy for the Order’s wealth that he drummed up false accusations against them and burned some of their leaders at the stake, torturing others.
Then the Pope completed the liquidation of the Templars by ordering the transfer of their assets to another military order, the KnightsHospitaller. Several countries also banned the Templars and seized their holdings. But King Dinis of Portugal was determined to preserve the Templar legacy.
Dinis persuaded the Pope to create a fresh military order, the Order of Christ. Disguising his intention to make the organization the heir of the Templars, Dinis moved the headquarters away from Tomar to Castro Marim. Then he transferred the holdings of the Portuguese Templars to the new order. A new chapter had begun.

Thank you, David!
DeleteThe creation of the Order of Christ allowed the Portuguese king to retain the military skills of the Knights Templar, to retain the lands of the Order and to bring it under the control of the monarchy. This rebranding kept the ethos of the Order and enabled them to Discover the New World.
