  Blog #2:  After the Templar Dissolution By Sylvia Anginotti When t he Order of Christ was created from the remnants of the Knights Templar in Portugal, it lost the international status that the Knights Templar had enjoyed under the pope . The Order now owed its allegiance to the Kings of Portugal and was subject to the religious control of the Bishop of Aljubarrota. Later, during the reign of King John I of Portugal the Order of Christ returned to the  city of T o mar and the Castle that the Knights Templar had built in 1160. King John’s third son. Prince Henry, was made Governor of the Order. He was the first s ecular leader of the Order and brought it under the control of the monarchy.   Blog #1 Death of the Knights Templar When I attended graduate school, History books claimed the Pope dissolved the Order of the Knights Templar  in 1312. But that wasn't the end of the story. Read on. It isn't well known, but the Templars warred against the Muslims in locations outside the Holy land, including Spain and Portugal. A struggle Christians referred to as the Reconquista . Portugal was the first to evict the Muslims in 1272 thanks in large part to the superb military skills of the Knights Templar. But the Order’s accomplishment was forgotten 40 years later, when the Pope bowed to the King of France and abolished it  The king was so greedy for the Order’s wealth that he drummed up false accusations against them and burned some of their leaders at the stake, torturing others.
